Denials abound on Spanish bank bailout

There’s been a spate of denials of knowledge around reports that Spain will request European aid for its ailing banks over the weekend.

Reuters, quoting E-U and German sources, says Finance Ministers of the 17-nation Eurozone will hold a conference call tomorrow – to discuss a Spanish request for an aid package.

Spain says it’s not aware of any possible weekend conference call.

The EU Commission says its has no news of a request from Madrid of a bailout for Spanish banks.

A spokesman for the German Chancellor Angela Merkel refused to make any comment on the continuing speculation saying the decision is up to the Spanish government.
