Clare’s Fianna Fáil has described the decision to defer changes to the property tax as “sensible”.

Reform of the tax is being delayed until an Oireachtas Budgetary Oversight Committee considers a review into how it’s applied to homeowners.

The valuation date has been deferred until November 1st 2020, meaning there will be no change to the rates people pay until 2021.

Timmy Dooley believes hikes in property tax should be centred around people’s ability to pay, but he insists that this decision was rushed:

The Minister for Finance has defended the Government’s decision though.

Minister Paschal Donohue says it’s not about preparing for an election this year.
