Preparations Underway To Protect Clare Homes Ahead Of Storm Jorge

Preparations are underway in Clare to protect homes threatened by floods, ahead of the arrival of Storm Jorge.

A status orange wind alert has been issued for the county, as well as a yellow rainfall alert, and Met Eireann is warning of a further risk of flooding over the coming days.

It comes as residents in Springfield, Clonlara continue the battle to protect their homes.

Residents in Springfied, Clonlara who’ve been fighting to save their homes are on tenderhooks today, as Storm Jorge approaches.

Met Eireann has issued two weather alerts for Clare – an orange wind alert is in place from 6am tomorrow morning until 3am on Sunday morning, with gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour expected.

While a yellow rainfall alert is currently in place, with up to 30 millimetres of rain forecast.

Forecaster Elizabeth Coleman says the rain due today raises the risk of flooding in parts of the country.

Clare County Council has issued reassurances that they have enough resources to deal with both the flooding in Springfield, as well as the threat of Storm Jorge over the coming days.

Hundreds of additional sandbags, as well as further pumps have been put in place in the Springfield area to bolster temporary defences, while members of the army and civil defence also continue to provide assistance.

While the ESB is continuing to release 400 tonnes of water per second from Parteen Weir, drier weather conditions yesterday led to a slight drop in water levels in Springfield overnight.

But it may only be a short reprieve, with the storm approaching.

Flood Defence Works for the area are at least a year away and Local resident Bridget Kinsella says they’re tired of Government inaction.
