Ireland Fined €5m Over Derrybrien Wind Farm

Ireland has been handed a multi-million euro fine for failing to comply with EU legislation at a wind farm close to the Galway-Clare boundary.

The State must pay €5 million, plus an additional daily fine of €15,000 until the government is compliant with legislation on assessing the environmental impact of the Derrybrien Wind Farm in South Co. Galway.

In 2003, huge landslides at the site of the wind farm caused pollution in a nearby river, resulting in the death of tens of thousands of fish.

In 2008, Ireland was ordered to properly examine the consequences of the 70-turbine wind farm, but the Court has found that this has yet to happen.
