The HSE has gone sale agreed on just over five acres of land for the new 100 bed community nursing unit.

The project is listed as a priority on the HSE Capital Plan 2019, with a state-of-the-art facility to be built, to cater for long stay residents.

It will include 88 single and four twin rooms, as well as four palliative care facilities, and will be designed to comply with HIQA standards.

The current St Joseph’s Hospital, which is located on the Lifford Road, had restrictions placed on it by HIQA back in January of 2017 which banned new admissions.

The health watchdog said that the HSE failed to address ongoing issues there, with a landmark courtcase following which saw St Joseph’s permitted to keep its doors open.

Since then, work has been ongoing in sourcing a new site and the HSE says this news comes after an extensive appraisal of a number of sites in the Ennis area.

Once the contracts are signed, it is the HSE’s intention to commence procurement of a design team to progress the new St. Joseph’s.
