Clonlara Residents Evacuated As Shannon Bursts It’s Banks

Residents in Clonlara are calling on Clare’s four TDs to put flooding at the top of their agenda when the Dáil returns.

A number of families in Springfield have been evacuated from their homes after heavy rainfall led to the Shannon bursting it’s banks, in a repeat of the nightmare scenario they last faced four years ago.

Seven thousand sandbags were delivered to the area ahead of the weekend to aid in efforts to protect homes, but a several houses have now been cut off by the rising waters.

A yellow rainfall alert for Clare has just ended (8am) but it’s feared further heavy rain will lead to even more flooding along the Shannon in the coming days.

Local resident Gerardine Quinlivan says they’re frustrated with the slow pace of action, as she insists there is a solution.
