In a statement published on social media, the newspaper says today’s edition is its last.

The statement says the decision has been taken to cease publication of the paper in the midst of what’s described as ‘severe economic and technological headwinds.’

The paper says its circulation, and advertising revenues have fallen, and that the rise in internet and free online platforms has fundamentally changed the marketplace for local newspapers.

The statement says it’s a sad day for its staff, and thanks its readers.

The Clare People was first published in 2005, and has been controlled most recently by co-founder, Ennis-native and aircraft leasing entrepreneur Domhnal Slattery.
