This is the first time the CSO has compiled data on deaths due to alzheimers and dementia which, between them, claimed over 800 lives in Ireland between January and March of this year.

20 of those deaths occured in Clare, and of those 16 were women.

The same set of statistics shows those people were among the 236 Clare residents who died during the same period, while there were 376 births.

27 of those births were to mother aged at least 40, and 125 births were registered outside of marriage or civil partnership.

This is broadly in line with the national average.
