CSO Figures Reveal Crime Levels In Clare’s Towns

Official figures have revealed a significant increase in the number of burglaries and thefts reported in Ennis last year.

The newly-published Garda statistics, published by the CSO, break down crime levels for each Garda station and show that while both thefts and burglaries increased here last year, that wasn’t the case across the board.

Throughout Clare, the number of recorded burglaries and thefts here jumped last year, by 19% and 10% respectively.

But these figures reveal where those incidents were reported.

Unsurprisingly, given its population, the highest number of incidents was recorded in Ennis.

There, the number of burglaries soared by 59% last year to a total of 132, but that is still lower than every other year since 2011.

The number of burglaries in Shannon more than doubled, and in Tulla there were 12 burglaries last year, up from just one the year before.

Some areas recorded falls, including Kilkee which saw its lowest levels of burglaries since 2007.

For thefts, the increase in Ennis was again higher than the county rate, up 17% to 533.

The number of thefts in both Corofin and Ennistymon increased by around half, while there were falls in Scariff, Tulla and Sixmilebridge.

The CSO figures are published under reservation, because of concerns about the data from the GardaĆ, meaning some figures may be revised at a later date.
