A 24-year old man is to plead guilty to subjected three people to assaults, including a 73 year old man, over a six minute spell in Ennis town centre last April.

At Ennis District Court on Wednesday, solicitor for Pavel Kratochvil of Ard Caoin, Gort Rd, Ennis, Daragh Hassett said that Mr Kratochvil will be arraigned as soon as possible in the circuit court where he will be pleading guilty.

At the district court, Sgt Aiden Lonergan has previously outlined the State’s case against Mr Kratochvil and Judge Patrick Durcan declined jurisdiction after hearing an outline of the facts resulting in the case being transferred to the circuit court where stiffer penalties apply on conviction.

Sgt Lonergan stated that it will be alleged that a 59 year old customer in the upstairs of Supermac’s in Ennis was eating his meal when he was subject to an unprovoked assault by Mr Kratochvil on April 1st last.

Sgt Lonergan alleged that Gabriel Doyle while eating his Supermac’s food, Mr Kratochvil went over and totally unprovoked, started punching the man in the face.

Sgt Lonergan said that it is the State’s case that Mr Kratochvil carried out assaults in four to six minutes on three different people at around 6pm on the date. The other alleged victims are aged 53 and 73.

Sgt Lonergan said that the second alleged injury party was Brian Meeney (53) and he said that it will be alleged that Mr Kratochvil punched him into the face as he made his way in the direction of the Temple Gate hotel after exiting Supermacs.

Sgt Lonergan alleged that Mr Meeney suffered a serious punch to the forehead and that he may have been knocked unconscious for a moment.

Sgt Lonergan said that a third alleged victim, Martin Concannon (73) was getting out of his car with his wife in the Temple Gate car park and Mr Kratochvil appears to give him a kick in the back and pushed him onto the ground to give him a number of kicks to the body.

Asked were the wounds sustained by the alleged victims serious by Judge Durcan, Sgt Lonergan said: “No – the injuries were not serious – superficial wounds.”

Mr Kratochvil has been in custody since April 2nd after being refused bail.

Mr Hassett previously told Judge Durcan that a psychiatric assessment on his client “would go a long way to explain what happened here”.

Mr Hassett said that any order made by the circuit court judge may involve Mr Kratochvil being sent home to his native country.
