Clare County Council has taken legal action against the Wexford hurling manager, and former Clare player and manager, Davy Fitzgerald, to recover what it says are unpaid commercial rates bills and associated legal costs.

The Sunday Times reports that the Council originally secured a judgement against Fitzgerald in February 2014, and that it began another set of proceedings the following year, both in respect of The Bellsfort Inn Pub near Newmarket on Fergus.

In all, the local authority is seeking to recoup over €53,000.

Fitzgerald himself has not commented on the allegations, but a source close to the Sixmilebridge man has told the paper that he disputes the amount sought by the Council, resulting in the case running over several years.
