The Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council is calling for a complete study of the commercial rates system to be carried out in Ireland.

It follows comments made by businessman Laurence O’Brien, who runs a number of shops, says he was forced to close one of his Kilmaley stores because of the cost of paying rates there.

The current rate payable in Clare is set at 72.99 and calculated on the size of the shop but it’s claimed those in rural parts struggling to make ends meet find it difficult to pay.
