Council Could Object To Limerick Cement Plant Plans

Clare County Council looks set to take part in a process which could see it oppose plans for a Limerick facility to burn millions of tyres a year.

The Irish Cement plant at Castlemungret, a few hundred meters from Clare, has been given the go-ahead for a change of use that will allow it burn a wider range of fuels including incinerating tyres at 1,500 degrees.

The move had been opposed by locals, and discussed by Councillors here who have backed a suggestion that the local authority take part in the environmental licence process at An Bord Pleanála.
