Still Some Way Off COVID Surge – Harty

A former Clare TD is warning that we are still some way off the surge of COVID-19 in Ireland.

The Health Minister has signed regulations giving gardaí emergency power to enforce restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic.

People found not following health advice will be forced to return home.

Yesterday saw the largest daily rise in the number of deaths here since the outbreak began; 36 people died, bringing the total to 210.

There are now 5,709 confirmed cases, including 65 in Clare, with 5 new cases recorded in this county yesterday.

Dr Michael Harty is commending the Irish government’s response to the outbreak, saying the government is being led by health professionals, rather than the other way around.

However, he says with Italy as a case study, we could still be a fortnight out from the biggest swell of the pandemic in this country.

Dr Harty, who retired from Dáil Éireann ahead of this year’s General Election, says complacency simply isn’t an option if we want this to end any time soon.
