Shannon Group has confirmed that services for passengers, cargo operators and aviation businesses based in Shannon are still being facilitated at Shannon Airport, but a significantly reduced basis.

In a statement to Clare FM, the CEO of Shannon Group says it’s particularly important that they endeavour to keep the airport open, to facilitate the transport of essential and emergency goods.

Mary Considine also says that the safety and well-being of employees and customers remains their top priority and that like other airports across the world, they have seen a major decline in demand for air travel in recent weeks.

She has commended employees across Shannon Group, who she says have done tremendous work in extremely difficult circumstances, to support and reassure anxious customers.

Dublin and Cork airports have also announced this week that they are scaling back passenger operations, but will keep runways open for supplies.

Staff at Kerry Airport, meanwhile, have taken significant salary cuts and leave, as part of efforts by the airport to ensure the facility can stay open during the crisis.

While Knock Airport announced its suspending operations temporarily.

Ryanair, meanwhile, expects to ground most of its flights today and says they won’t resume for two months.

Europe’s largest airline has now offered its aircraft to EU Governments to help during the coronavirus crisis.
