Organisers of the annual Lisdoonvarna Match-Making Festival say no decision has been made as of yet on whether it will go ahead this year.

Hundreds of events across Clare and nationally are being cancelled as a result of COVID-19, and in light of the Government decision to ban mass gatherings of over 5,000 people until September.

That month is due to see the staging of the popular matchmaking festival, which is over 160 years old and typically attracts up to 60,000 people from across the world.

Organisers say that if there’s any risk to the public, it won’t go ahead, but matchmaker Willie Daly is hopeful that the situation will have improved by then.

Meanwhile, it’s been announced that this year’s Spancil Hill Horse Fair, scheduled for June, has been cancelled.

It’s just the second time the event has been cancelled in its 400 year history.
