While last night’s update sadly saw confirmation of 24 more COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland, the 107 new cases is the lowest announced here since March 21st.

One of those new cases is in Clare, bringing the total number of diagnoses here to 306.

This slower pace of the growth of the virus is a positive sign as the government looks to ease lockdown restrictions from next Monday, but other statistics also show the local hospital remains under pressure.

On Monday, there were 47 confirmed COVID-19 cases in University Hospital Limerick, as well as 62 more suspected cases amongst its patients.

That total number – 109 – is the highest of any hospital, and compares with 77 a week previously, and 67 the week before that.

This comes despite a fall in the total number of hospitalisations for coronavirus, generally.

The HSE says there were just eight vacant beds in UHL on Monday, half of those in its critical care units.

Four confirmed and six suspected cases of COVID-19 were being treated in critical care beds in Dooradoyle
