Plassey Campus Centre Ltd manages on campus student accommodation and is a separate legal entity to the University of Limerick.

It sought the views of the University’s Governing Authority on the matter, which made it’s recommendation at a meeting yesterday that refunds should be issued for students in rented accommodation.

The matter has been raised in recent weeks by Clare TDs including Michael McNamara.

The Independent representative says pressure should now also be maintained on the owners of private accommodation, for them to also offer refunds.

Separately, it’s also been announced that the University President Dr Des Fitzgerald will step down from the role later this year.

In a surprise move, he’s decided to resign after three years in the role, stating that the COVID-19 virus would “directly impact” his ability to serve the university.
