5,720 were on the live register in Clare at the end of June, the highest level seen here since February of 2018.

But this only highlights part of the economic storm caused by COVID-19, as it doesn’t take into account another 10,800 people here who are also out of work, but are availing of the pandemic unemployment support.

Clare’s live register figure alone is up by over 900 since February, an increase of 19%.

Areas associated with the Ennis social welfare office have had the biggest increase of 25.4%, up to 3,096.

For East Clare, the numbers of the live register are up 16.4% to 702.

Live register increases are smaller in Clare’s coastal areas, with jumps of 11.7% in West Clare (939) and 9.6% in the North of the county (to 983).
