Concerns have been raised over a jump in the parking rates in Ennis town centre.

The council is set to reduce the current €1.30 hourly rate to €1 for a six month trial from June – but in some areas, on street parking will rise to €2 for the same period.

In response to long-running issues surrounding parking in the county town, the Council plans to introduce at least 100 additional spaces over the next two years, and 500 more by 2022.

While off-street parking will drop by 30 cent per hour for the next six months, premium parts of the town centre will see a rise in the hourly rate from 1.30 to €2 in the same period.

Local Councillor Mary Howard says members of the Ennis Municipal District favour a flat rate of €1 per hour across the board.

She believes the supply issue can be addressed by looking at the number of parking permits granted to town centre businesses and residences.

The Council will monitor the new rates from June until December and review them early next year.

They come into play from the 1st of June.
