Concern That Broadband Delay Is Leading To Two-Tier Rural Economy

The rollout of the National Broadband Plan was expected to begin at the start of this month, but successive delays have taken their toll and a question mark still hangs over the entire project.

Controversy erupted in October when it emerged that former Communications Minister Denis Naughton had four private dinners with the lead tender for the project.

A key report, being carried out by Peter Smyth, is examining whether the National Broadband Plan was undermined by the meetings, but now it’s emerged that won’t be ready for several weeks.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says however that he still intends high speed broadband to be rolled out to every home.

But despite the Taoiseach’s assurances, concern is being expressed in West Clare about the pace of the plan.

President of Kilkee Chamber, Cillian Murphy says a divide is becoming evident in rural parts of the country on account of the patchy rollout.
