Mayor Of Clare Says Decision To Boycott RIC Commemorative Event Was “Personal”

The Mayor of Clare says his decision to boycott a commemorative event remembering the Royal Irish Constabulary was a “personal” one.

Meelick Fianna Fáil Councillor and General Election candidate Cathal Crowe was invited to the event at Dublin castle next week, which will be attended by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.

He’s declined, saying it is “historical revisionism gone too far”, while his party colleague and Deputy Mayor of Clare, Clare Colleran Molloy has also declined an invitation.

The force policed Ireland under British rule and Councillor Crowe believes that while individual members should perhaps be commemorated, the force as a whole should not.
