Storm Ali made landfall at around 5 o’clock this morning, and within a matter of hours winds of up to 87 kilometres per hour were recorded at Met Éireann’s monitoring station at Shannon Airport.

The orange wind alert issued for today has now been downgraded to yellow, but it will remain windy this afternoon.

Fallen trees accounted for the vast majority of the damage today and crews from Clare County Council have been dispatched to a number of areas.

Senior Engineer John Leahy says some areas have been affected worse than others.

Over 2,000 homes and businesses in parts of Clare lost power on account of the impact of the storm.

ESB crews have been working since early this morning, and have restored power to all but 460. Clare Area Manager Robert Grimes outlined the affected areas.

The ESB is urging anyone who remain affected by power outages to notify them immediately on 1850 372 999 and it’s advising people to stay clear of fallen lines.

Meanwhile, An Post says Storm Ali has caused disruption to services in more than 60 post offices.

Mail deliveries across parts of the North and North West had to be suspended during the height of the storm.

An Post says it’s working to restore full services as soon as possible.
