Local authorities were obliged to establish a vacant sites register at the beginning of last year.

The measure aimed to promote development on prime housing land nationwide.

Like many others, however, Clare County Council’s vacant sites register was, itself, vacant and that’s still the case now, over eighteen months on.

The Irish times reported last month that this was the case for 17 other Councils also.

Councils have the power to impose a levy on relevant lands, worth an initial 3% of its value, later rising to 7%.

However, for the tax to be applied in 2019, property owners had to be informedby June 1st.

Clare County Council says it’s continually reviewing the status of vacant sites across the county, and that in the event that it feels a specific site should be registered, this can be done on an ongoing basis.
