So far this year, Clare County Council has spent €643,000 on Traveller accommodation in this county – that’s projected to rise by a further €100,000 before the year end.

This is well ahead of last year’s spend of over €370,000 and eclipses the figure of €243,000 in 2016.

In terms of individual increases, security and legal costs have seen the biggest rises.

This year, it’s expected that a total of €120,000 will be paid out in security costs for Traveller accommodation – in 2016, that figure was just €1,351.

While Legal costs have a projected expenditure of €160,000 for 2018 versus just over €62,000 two years ago.

Waste collection, meanwhile, accounts for the biggest chunk of spending on Traveller accommodation for this year at €195,000.

It means that in total, from 2016 to this year, in the region of €1.4 million will have been spent on Traveller accommodation.
