Along with her playing partner Jean Moloney, Mairéad has received a heroes welcome at their surprise homecoming where friends, family and volunteers all gathered to cheer them home.

The pair flew the Irish colours all the way over in Abu Dhabi during the Special Olympics World Games, with their four days of intensive events eventually paying dividends.

Jean and Mairéad – who was the oldest of the 7,500 competitors at the games – were delighted with the reception.

Ennis swimmer Emma Barrett, meanwhile, managed to take home two medals in her time in Abu Dhabi – a gold in a relay, along with an individual bronze.

Emma’s homecoming was held over the weekend and she says it’s been a wonderful experience.

Today, it’s time for these athletes to rest and recuperate but soon it’s back to normal for Emma, Mairéad and Jean who will get back to training and focus on bringing home even more medals to the Banner County.
