A Clarecastle historian insists the Taoiseach’s wearing of the shamrock poppy as a powerful gesture in an era of reconcillation.

Leo Varadkar has come under fire for wearing the Irish-themed red poppy badge to commemorate the Irish who died in World War I in the Dáil this week.

The pin was commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great War by the Irish branch of the Royal British Region in remembrance of the 206,000 Irishmen that fought.
