A Clare Senator insists that apparent “queue-jumping” must stop to ensure confidence is maintained in the Covid-19 vaccination programme.

It comes after 100 Clare and Limerick Gardaí were given their first vaccines this week, despite members of the force not being prioritised for the jab.

The vaccinations were administered at the Limerick vaccination centre, which is run by the UL Hospitals Group.

The group insists the jabs were offered to Gardaí in line with national guidance, and that it won’t impact on the timetable for vaccinating people with underlying medical conditions.

A Garda source told Clare FM that Gardaí were notified about the vaccines being available on Sunday, befer the vaccines on Monday.

Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway, who is his party’s Seanad spokesperson on Health says he doesn’t believe the guidelines were adhered to in this instance.

Meanwhile, one Clareman who is among those with an underlying health condition, has described the move as a blatant disregard for the medically vulnerable, many of whom remain unvaccinated.

While Quin man John Wall, who has terminal cancer, is receiving his first vaccine dose today. He says he has been contacted by large numbers of other medically vulnerable people who are still waiting.

He’s been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that he believes questions need to be answered.
