The Residential Tenancies Board Rent Index says average rents here fell by 16 euro to 734 euro in the first quarter of this year.

But despite this, the cost of renting a home between January and March is still 5% higher than the same time last year.

According to the report, renters in Kilrush were paying the lowest rent of the county’s largest towns at the start of this year, where the average rent was 570.

In Ennistymon, renters were forking out 610 euro a month on average, while in Ennis and Killaloe the monthly cost was 770.

Shannon was the most expensive place to rent a home though, where tenants paid more than 790 euro.

Several calls have been made in the past for Clare to be designated a rent pressure zone to combat rising rents, but these figures show that no part of the county meets the necessary criteria.
