A 44 year old is due to be sentenced today for raping his pregnant ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in her Clare home almost three years ago.
Justice Paul Carney has described the case as a dangerous hostage siege at the upper end of criminality.
The English native was convicted of several charges last January including rape, false imprisonment and possession of a firearm at the woman’s home on September 9th 2007.

In a letter read out in court yesterday the accused apologised for attacking the woman he says he loves but still denies raping her.
The victim has described the ordeal as “mentally torturous” and that she was led to believe that the death of her and that of her unborn child was imminent.
