Family Confirm Clare Newlywed Has Died In Greek Wildfires

A Clareman who was celebrating his honeymoon with his new wife has died in the Greek wildfires.

The fires, described as the worst in modern European history, have hit tourist areas near the Greek capital of Athens this week leaving at least 80 people dead.

The family of Newmarket-on-Fergus native Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp, who had been honeymooning in the resort of Mati with his new wife Zoe Holohan, has confirmed his death this evening.

Ms Holohan is being treated for burns in hospital after getting separated from her husband in the chaos.

In a statement, the family says they are deeply saddened by his death and they’re appealing for privacy as they grieve and Zoe recovers.

Funeral arrangements are to be announced later.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it’s continuing to provide consular assistance to the Irish people caught up in the wildfires.
