The number of books being read in the libraries is down, however, though internet usage at branches throughout the county has increased.

Figures released to Clare County Councillors show just over 15,200 people were registered as readers across the Clare library network.

The figure covers the ten months to the end of August, and represents a fall of 600 on the same timeframe last year.

A further 2,500 people joined libraries here in November and December last year.

Unsurprisingly, the DeValera library in Ennis is Clare's most popular, followed by Shannon, Kilkee, Kilrush, Sixmilebridge and Scarriff.

Miltown Malbay, Kilkee and Tulla all bucked the trend in recording an increase in membership this year.

445 thousand books have been issued by the county's libraries this year, while overall internet usage in the branches rose by 9 per cent.
