Clare Government Representatives Defend Handling Of Pandemic

Clare government representatives have been defending the handling of the Coronavirus pandemic, in the wake of the latest announcement on lockdown.

Level five restrictions will remain in place until at least April, with changes announced only for schools and childcare.

Level five restrictions have been extended until April 5th, with a review before Easter.

Save the re-opening of schools and childcare on phased basis over the month of March, there are no other changes, something Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD has defended.

He believes the Government has managed the handling of the pandemic “reasonably well”, but insists that preventing death must be the priority.

Clare’s Green Party Senator admits the government may have prioritised the economy more than they should have during the early stages of the pandemic.

Inagh Senator Roisin Garvey says it’s been a balancing act for the government in the past year.

The Tanaiste has said four criteria will be used to decide if covid 19 restrictions can be eased further.

The number of cases; progress with vaccines; variants and hospital numbers will be used to measure the country’s progress in tackling the virus.

There have been calls for the Government to decide when certain things can be reopened based on the number of covid cases.

But Clare’s Fine Gael Senator, Martin Conway fears setting such targets would ultimately create more uncertainty.
