Councillors Slam “Ludicrous” Motion Calling For Joe Brolly’s Reinstatement

A controversial motion put before Clare County Council calling on RTÉ to reinstate Joe Brolly to their GAA coverage has been labelled “ludicrous” and a waste of resources.

The motion suffered a heavy defeat at last evening’s meeting of the local authority.

Former Derry footballer Joe Brolly was unceremoniously removed from the state broadcaster’s GAA coverage after last year’s drawn All-Ireland Final.

His removal prompted three local Independent Councillors to call for his re-instatement, a call that saw them make national headlines.

Their motion was finally discussed last evening, where it was soundly beaten.

Those who proposed it – Councillors Gerry Flynn, Ann Norton and PJ Ryan – voted in favour, but the remaining 25 Councillors all rejected it.

Sixmilebridge Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan O’Callaghan didn’t mince his words in reaction to it.

Bodyke Fine Gael Councillor Joe Cooney, meanwhile, who is also Chair of Clare GAA’s County Board, says this motion detracted from more serious issues, and doesn’t fall under the Council’s remit anyways.

Councillor Gerry Flynn defended his motion, in spite of the heavy defeat.

The Shannon representative says it’s only right that the State broadcaster is held to account.

Clare FM has made contact with Joe Brolly in relation to this matter – he’s declined to comment.
