Plans for a major solar farm in North Clare have been stopped in their tracks by Clare County Council.

The local authroity has refused a planning application from Cork-based Amarenco Solar for the almost 12 hectare development at Ballingaddy East near Ennistymon.

The development would have seen 22,000 solar panels erected and in its response, Clare County Council said the main reason for refusing permission was the visual impact on the rural landscape.

The planning authority states that the solar farm would have been highly visible from a number of areas around the site.

Amarenco Solar now has four weeks in which to lodge an appeal against the decision with An Bórd Pleanála.
