Clare councillors concerned over fracking plans

Clare Councillors have expressed concern about the continued efforts to implement fracking in the county, as legal advice renders their efforts to prohibit it null and void.

In recent weeks, Enegi Oil released new data showing a 495 square kilometre area of West Clare is suitible for the extraction of gas from shale.  It’s now set to apply to the government for a further licence allowing it to carry out more tests.

Clare Councillors had voted to amend the county development plan to prohibit fracking, but local representatives have been given legal advice stating the document cannot contain ‘crude exclusionary policy’.

Green Party Councillor Brian Meaney feels local representatives now need to find a solution which is legal, and keeps fracking out.
