It’s claimed the closure of post offices in rural areas would be “the ruination of local villages”.

It comes in the wake of claims by Clare Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley, that 14 existing post masters and postmistresses have been offered voluntary redundancies by the company in recent days, among nearly 400 nationally.

An Post insists there will be no compulsory closure of offices, and their moves comes in the wake of talks with the Irish Postmasters Union.

Carrigaholt, Quilty, KilmurryMcMahon and Feakle Post Offices have confirmed to Clare FM they WILL remain open and Broadford Post Office says while it hasn’t been approached by An Post, it has currently no plans to close.

It’s understood the vast majority of the remaining ten in Cooraclare, Craggagh-Fanore, Cree, Doonbeg, Dromindoora, Kilfenora, Labasheeda, Lissycasey and Whitegate are considering their options.

Geraldine Donnellan is the Postmistress in Cooraclare and she’s been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that she believes the company is trying to squeeze people out of the business.
