Tour De Munster Cyclists Pass Through Clare Raising Hundreds Of Thousands For Charity

Dozens of cyclists are passing through the Banner County this afternoon as part of the annual Tour de Munster charity event.

It’s the 19th year of the event, which sees participants cycle through every county in the province, raising money for the local branches of Down Syndrome Ireland.

It was an early start in Killaloe today for the Tour de Munster cyclists, who spent the night in the town having a well-earned rest after cycling from Cork to Clare yesterday.

From 9 o’clock this morning, they were back on the road for what is now the largest fundraiser in the calendar for the local Down’s Syndrome branches

Chair of Clare Down’s Syndrome John O’Reilly says it’s a massive support for families in this county.

Riders stopped in Ennis this morning, en route to Kildysart Killimer and ultimately, Tralee.

Among them, one of the country’s most famous ever sportsmen.

Seán Kelly has been involved in the event for a number of years now and despite taking to majors like the Tour de France, says there’s something extra special about this cycle.

Since its inception 19 years ago, the Tour de Munster has seen over €2.7 million raised for local charities and with around 100 cyclists once again this time around, it’s hoped this year they’ll break the €3 million mark.

The funds allow for the provision of services such as speech therapy, physio and many other essential therapies.

Louise and Jill, both from Quin, say it’s a massively worthwhile event to come on board with.

And though they’re on the road and focused on 2019 now, organiser of the event Paul Sheridan says the wheels are already in motion for their landmark 20th cycle next summer.

The event finishes in Cork on Sunday.
