Midwest Simon is calling on the Government to reverse a decision on an application for funding for its food bank.

The service, which has been in operation for six years, has provided food parcels for seven thousand people across Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary last year, and has seen increased demand since the beginning of the pandemic.

It usually relies on money from the fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived, as well as local fundraising, but with their charity shops in Ennis and Limerick closed on account of the COVID-19 restrictions, revenue has dried up.

Midwest Simon recently applied to the Department of Employment and Social Protection for funding of €28,000 in light of difficulties associated with the Public Health Emergency, but the application has been rejected.

Head of Operations at Midwest Simon, Elisha Fahy has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that without some form of funding, they will be forced to close the vital foodbank service by the end of the month.
