Calls For Firm Commitment From Britain On Irish Border

The Taoiseach has called for a firm commitment from Britain on the border between the Republic and the North.

Leo Varadkar has met with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Sweden today, where Brexit was top of the agenda.

It was one of two meetings on the issue – Minster Simon Coveney has also discussed the matter with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson in Dublin today.

Speaking in Dublin today the British Foreign Secretary says the British Government has no interest in seeing a hard border between Ireland and the North.

Boris Johnson has called for Brexit negotiations to move to the stage so the nature of the border can be discussed in detail.

He says the issue matter hugely to people on both sides.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney believes there’s a sense of ‘jumping into the dark’ when it comes to Brexit.

He’s questioned the British government’s clarity and credibility when it comes to avoiding a hard border with Northern Ireland.

The Taoiseach has also met with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Sweden ahead of a ahead of a summit of EU leaders.

Its understood Leo Varadkar insisted on a firm committement on the border before progressing to the next stage of negotiations.

Clare’s Senator, meanwhile, admits that one way or another, we will feel the impact of Brexit here.

And Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway says it’s the Government’s responsibility to ensure the impact is minimised.
