Clare County Council has been called on to apologise to women and children who attended the Kilrush mother and baby home.

Between 1922 and 1926, the facility, which was based on the Cooraclare Road housed 320 women and 180 children.

The request comes on the back of revelations about the Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, and the discovery of the remains of a significant number of young bodies on it’s former site last week.

Fine Gael Counillor Mary Howard has also added her voice to calls for a memorial be commissioned in memory of those who stayed at the Kilrush home – she believes the Church didn’t provide proper care for the women.
