Calls For Authorities To Up Efforts In Tackling Clare Homelessness

Calls are being made for communities, the Church and relevant authorities to step up their efforts to tackle homelessness in Clare.

It comes as new figures show the number of people without a roof over their head in the county has doubled over the past 12 months.

Anne Rynne of Miltown Malbay has written a song which she refers to as a ‘Rallying Cry’ to give homeless children a voice.

Clare County Council’s housing committee has heard there were 59 adults and 52 children living in emergency accomodation such as hotels or B&Bs at the end of last month – almost double last year’s figure.

Dermot Hayes is a member of the committee, he fears the upward trend will continue over the coming 12 months.

Irish Bishops are urging the government to step up and end the ‘indignity’ that is homelessness, calling for a constitutional guarantee of the right to housing.

Noting the death of eight rough sleepers across the country in the last twelve weeks, they say the crisis is a “collective failrue of our society to protect the most vulnerable among us”.

Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that the problem is as serious in Clare as elsewhere.
