A former Chair of Clare’s Joint Policing Committee insists more Gardaí are needed in Clare to ensure rural parts are patrolled.

PJ Ryan’s comments come as figures released by the Justice Minister show that the number of Gardaí in this county is at its highest level in seven years, at 316.

That’s ten more than this time last year and is a significant improvement on the all-time low of 287 in 2014.

But concern has also been raised about the impact of the closure of many rural Garda stations around the county – in 2012 alone, eight were shut down.

Independent Sixmilebridge Councillor Ryan has been telling Clare FM’s James Mulhall that the jump in numbers is welcome, but there is always a need for more.
