Call For Additional Services In Clare As Direct Provision Centres Deal With Overcrowding

The government is being called on to add extra services in Lisdoonvarna and Meelick, for those living in overcrowded direct provision centres there.

Figures released by the Department of Justice show that both centres in this county – the King Thomond Hotel in Lisdoonvarna and Knockalisheen in Meelick – are over capacity.

By the end of last week, 5,928 people were living in direct provision, with facilities in five counties including Clare oversubscribed, while a large majority of the country’s 83 centres are close to being so too.
