The Lough Derg lifeboat was called into action twice in the last 24 hours.

They rescued 6 people and a dog whose vessels had gotten into difficulty on the lake.

The first shout was shortly before 2.30 yesterday afternoon when the crew went to the assistance of two people on board a cruiser which had gone aground at Ryan’s Point on the eastern shore of the lake.

The pair were found safe and well. However efforts to free the 38ft vessel off the rocks failed. Instead both crew members and their dog were taken on board the lifeboat and brought to Dromineer while arrangements were made to have the cruiser lifted off the rocks by a specialist crew from the local marina.

Just after 7.20 last evening the Lough Derg lifeboat was tasked once again by the Valentia Coastguard.

This time a 40 foot cruiser with four people on board suffered engine failure at the northern end of the lake. The lifeboat took the vessel on tow to Dromineer Harbour.

Brendan O’Brien, Deputy Launching Authority at Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat Station, is advising all boat users on the lake, to ‘bring charts of the lake in addition to electronic systems of navigation, and plan a safe passage before leaving harbour’.
