Clare County Council has reached the closing stages of preparing the Ennis 2040 Economic and Spatial Strategy, which it says will lay out a vision for the county town, and assist it in attracting inward investment.

A multi-disciplinary team led by economic consultants GVA Grimley Ltd. has been appointed, and the document will also include a marketing strategy for Ennis and its Environs for the next two decades and beyond.

It’s expected the plan, which will be published next Spring, will earmark key sites for development and the Council’s Director of Services for Economic Development and Planning, Liam Conneely says it’s hugely important.

The development of the plan has received a broad welcome, with the President of Ennis Chamber saying a long-term vision for developing economic opportunities is vital.

Managing Director of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon, Diarmuid Mc Mahon is on the steering committee for the Ennis 2040 plan and he believes the county town needs to be ready for the changing demographic here.

The Head of the Clare Local Enterprise Office believes that younger people are choosing to return home to live and work here after the recession, though Pádraic McElwee admits they’re few in number.

He believes that businesses are facing a challenge in preparing for what’s coming down the track, but insists Ennis is headed in the right direction.
