After the alarm was raised this morning, a group of off-duty Clare Water Safety lifeguards made their way to Seafield Pier, and on arrival, they found that a man had managed to escape from the vehicle and was safe.

An ambulance and two units of the fire brigade from Ennistymon were dispatched to the incident along with Gardaí, and two divers from the local volunteer Burren Sub Aqua Club were requested to check if there was anyone else inside the car.

After the dive was completed, it was confirmed there were no other occupants and the emergency services were stood down.

The driver of the car was assessed at the scene by National Ambulance Service paramedics, before being transferred to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. It’s understood he wasn’t badly injured.

A tow truck with a crane was brought in to remove the car from the water and the recovery operation was completed at 2 o’clock this afternoon.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
