Gardaí say that the R473 Kilimer to Knockerra road has now fully re-opened after the discovery of a suspicious device.

Emergency services were called to the scene this morning after the object, understood to be historical in nature, was discovered in a shed near Knockerra.

The road was closed for a number of hours due to the proximity of the object to the route, but the device has now been removed safely after the Army’s Explosives Ordnance Disposal were called.

Earlier, in our lunchtime news, Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill reported on this story, and we heard from Inspector Helen Costello in relation to it.

The alarm was raised at around 11 o’clock this morning, after the device was discovered in a shed on an old farm yard in Tarmen, Knock.

Units from Kilrush Garda Station were dispatched to the scene and the road between Killimer and Knockerra has been closed as a precautionary measure.

The Army’s Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team has been notified and is currently en route to the scene.

It’s not known at this stage if the device is viable, but Gardaí believe it is historical in nature.
