Dressed in a blue hoodie and black tracksuit bottoms 31 year old Joe Heffernan remained silent during last night’s short hearing, where he was formally charged with the murder of 21 year old Eoin Ryan

The court heard that in response to the charge Mr. Heffernan told Gardaí  – "I Killed the Devil".

Solicitor for the accused John Casey said his client was in need of medical attention and had been seen by local consultant psychiatrist John O’Mahoney who recommended he be admitted to the Central Mental Hospital where a bed is available.

Mr. Casey asked if the court could assist in this transfer but Judge Joseph Mangan stated "things will take their course" remanding Joe Heffernan in custody to Limerick Prison.
