Anger After Testing Error Led To Finding Of High Lead Levels In Water Supply

Anger is being expressed by residents in one North Clare townland after media reports stated that a high level of lead had been found in their water supply.

Irish Water says the test at Kilkeedy near Tubber was an error, and that there has in fact been no issues of lead contaminating the water supply there.

However, details of the test emerged in the media last week – months after the test was carried out – and locals say they had to wait a number of additional days to be given these reassurances.

Irish Water has apologised for any concern, but Kilkeedy resident Sile Hynes – who works as an industrial chemist – thinks there should have been better communication with them

Irish Water have issued the following statement on this matter to Clare FM:

Irish Water would like to assure customers in Kilkeedy, Co Clare that the water supply in the area is safe to drink and that recent reports of high levels of lead in the supply were as a result of a testing error.

The adverse result was recorded in April 2018 at one property in the area. However, when re-testing was carried out subsequently, this was confirmed as being an erroneous result. The EPA have been notified accordingly.

Irish Water can confirm that there have been no recorded lead exceedances on the Kilkeedy water supply scheme.

Irish Water apologises for any concern or inconvenience as a result of this testing error.

Details of water quality test results are available on the Irish Water website at https://www.water.ie/water-supply/water-quality/. Customers who have any additional queries or concerns can contact the 24/7 customer care line at 1850 278 278.
